Master Class (ENG) - Philippe le Hardi - Diversity of Burgundy

    Master Class  FRI Oct 16th at 19:30 - 20:20

Speaker: Chloé Déroy, Client Account Manger, Philippe le Hardi

This lecture will be held in English.

In this Master Class, you will experience a true taste of history. The history of Domaine du Château Philippe le Hardi dates back to 1342; it served as the majestic estate of the first Duke of Burgundy, Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold). He became famous for banning the cultivation of Gamay grapes in the Côte d'Or in 1395. The Master Class features a tasting of two white wines and three red wines. Among the whites, the Mercurey hails from the Côte Chalonnaise region, while the Saint-Aubin comes from the Côte de Beaune, situated right next to the world-famous Montrachet vineyards. All the red wines originate from the Côte d'Or, and each tells its own story of its specific terroir.

The roots of Domaine du Château Philippe le Hardi (formerly Château de Santenay) go back to 1342. It was once the majestic estate of the first Duke of Burgundy. Philippe le Hardi inherited the duchy from his father, the King of France, and gained renown for prohibiting the cultivation of Gamay grapes in the Côte d'Or. In an edict issued in 1395, he decreed that only Pinot Noir grapes could be used to produce red wines on these already legendary slopes. The estate manages a total of approximately 100 hectares of vineyards across 35 villages in the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Chalonnaise regions. Pinot Noir is cultivated on about 65% of the vineyard area, and Chardonnay on 35%. The estate received organic certification in 2024.
