Master Class SAT Oct 17th at 16:00 - 16:50
Speaker: Joana Alonso, Export Manager, Krohn Portwine, WineStone Group
This lecture will be held in English
Krohn—officially known as Wiese & Krohn—is a traditional Port house founded in 1865 by two Norwegian cousins, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. The house is particularly renowned for its Tawny and Colheita Ports (single-vintage Tawnies) that have been aged for extended periods in oak casks. Krohn’s cellars have held exceptionally old reserves dating back to the 19th century. A key estate for the house is Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Rio Torto valley of the Douro region; this vineyard also supplies the grapes for its highly regarded Vintage Ports.
A significant shift in ownership occurred in 2013 when The Fladgate Partnership—the group behind Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft—acquired Krohn. However, Krohn changed hands again in 2023, when the Portuguese WineStone Group acquired both the Krohn brand and Quinta do Retiro Novo. Krohn is thus now part of the WineStone Group.
Colheita Port remains a particular strength for Krohn: this single-vintage wine undergoes long maturation in wooden casks before bottling, imparting the nutty, dried-fruit, caramel, and spice notes characteristic of Tawny Port, as well as great complexity.
In this Master Class, you will have the opportunity to explore these magnificent Krohn Ports under the guidance of the company’s Export Manager. Joana Alonso is a trained winemaker with two decades of experience in the industry. He has international experience from China, Macau, and England, and possesses a deep understanding of the Douro region and Port wine traditions. You will have the opportunity to taste 4 different portwine and as a last a rare vintage 1961.
Wines to be tasted:
Krohn Lagrima Fine White Port
Krohn 10 Year’s Old
Krohn Colheita 2014
Krohn Colheita 1983
Krohn Vintage 1961
